The NC State General Education Program (GEP) for undergraduates at N.C. State was approved by the Provost on February 1, 2008 to be effective beginning Summer II, 2009 (GEP Mission Statement and Rationale).

GEP Category Requirements (39 credit hours)
- 6 credit hours in the Mathematical Sciences
- At least one course must have an MA or ST prefix
- 7 credit hours in the Natural Sciences
- At least one laboratory course or course with a laboratory
- 6 credit hours in the Humanities
- Selected courses must be from two different disciplines
- 6 credit hours in the Social Sciences
- Selected courses must be from two different disciplines
- 3 credit hours in the Additional Breadth category
- Select Additional Breadth course from either the Humanities/Social Sciences/Visual and Performing Arts course lists or Mathematics/Natural Sciences/Engineering course lists depending on the Major
- 5 credit hours in Interdisciplinary Perspectives
- 2 credit hours in Health and Exercise Studies
- Must include one Fitness and Wellness HESF 100-level course
- 4 credit hours of ENG 101 for the Introduction to Writing requirement
- Successful completion requires a C- or better
GEP Co-Requisite Requirements
- 1 course in U.S. Diversity (no credit hour requirement)
- 1 course in Global Knowledge (no credit hour requirement)
- FLx 102 level proficiency
- Communication in the Major (Requirement fulfilled within the curriculum requirements)
- Technology Fluency (Requirement fulfilled within the curriculum requirements)
