Forest Management (15FGM)

Description

The Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources offers a 15 credit hour minor in Forest Management that is available to all baccalaureate degree students at North Carolina State University except majors in Forest Management. The goals of the minor are to provide elementary knowledge of forest management, appreciation for the value of forest resources, and understanding of the need for sustainable management. The minor is particularly valuable to students majoring in related disciplines.

Requirements

  • Requires completion of 15 credit hours, selected from each of two categories in one of the two following options.
  • A grade of ‘C-‘ or better is required in all courses in the minor.

OPTION A

Required Courses (9 credit hours)

  • FOR 172 Forest System Mapping and Mensuration 1 (2 cr)
  • FOR 339 Dendrology (4 cr)
  • FOR 252 Introduction to Forest Science (3 cr)

Elective Courses (6 credit hours)

Take two courses from two of the three groups of courses (6 hours). *FOR 303 may not be double-counted.

Group 1:
FOR 248 Forest History, Technology and Society (3 cr) or FOR 414 World Foresty (3 cr) or FOR 330 North Carolina Forests (3 cr)

Group 2:
FOR 260 Forest Ecology (3 cr) or FOR 303* Silvics and Forest Tree Physiology (3 cr)

Group 3:
FOR 303* Silvics and Forest Tree Physiology (3 cr) or FOR 430 Forest Health and Protection (3 cr)

 

OPTION B

Required Courses (15 credit hours)

  • FOR 172 Forest System Mapping and Mensuration 1 (2 cr)
  • FOR 339 Dendrology (4 cr)

Attend Forestry Summer Camp and take the following five courses (9 hours): 

  • FOR 204 Silviculture (2 cr)
  • FOR 261 Forest Communities (2 cr)
  • FOR 264 Forest Wildlife (1cr)
  • FOR 265 Fire Management (1 cr)
  • FOR 273 Forest System Mapping and Mensuration II (3 cr)

Students wishing to complete the minor in Forest Management should contact the person listed below. For certification, students should see the contact person listed below no later than the registration period for the student’s final semester at NC State.
