Feed Milling (11FEM)

Description

The Minor in Feed Milling is designed to provide a foundation in animal feed milling technology. The objectives of the minor are for the student to: acquire an understanding of the functions of a modern feed mill; to learn procedures to assist in operating a feed mill; and to apply academic skills to the challenges of operating a manufacturing facility.

Requirements

A minimum of 15 credit hours from the prescribed list of courses and a grade of ‘C-‘ or better in these courses is required to receive the Minor in Feed Milling. An overall GPA of 2.0 is required to pursue and graduate from the minor.

Required Courses (12 credits)

All students are required to take one of the following introductory courses in Poultry or Animal Science:

  • PO 201 Poultry Science and Production (3 cr.) OR ANS 150 Introduction to Animal Science (3 cr).

And four additional courses as follows:

  • FM (ANS) (PO) 425 Feed Manufacturing Technology (3 cr.)
  • FM 460 Feed Mill Operations and Leadership (2 cr.)
  • FM 480 Feed Quality Assurance and Formulation (3 cr.)
  • FM 494 Feed Mill Learning Experience (1 cr.)

Elective Courses  (minimum 3 hours)

Students need enough credits from the elective list below to make at least 15 total credits for the minor.

  • ARE 311 Agricultural Markets (3 cred)
  • BAE 201 Shop Processes and Management (3 cred)
  • BAE 202 Introduction to Biological and Agricultural Engineering Methods (4 cred)

  • PO/ANS/FS 350 Introduction to HACCP (3 cred)
  • PO/ANS/NTR 415 Comparative Nutrition or ANS 230 Nutrition of Domestic Animals (3 cred)
  • BAE 432 Agricultural and Environmental Safety (3 cred)
  • AEE 350 Personal Leadership Development in Agriculture and Life Sciences (3 cred)
  • AEE 360 Developing Team Leadership in Agriculture and Life Sciences (3 cred)
  • CS 216 Oilseed Crop Production (3 cred)
  • CS 218 Cereal Grain Crop Production (2 cred)

Certification

Certification for Minor in Feed Milling must be submitted to Dr. Adam Fahrenholz, 234C Scott Hall, no later than the registration period for the student’s final semester at NC State. The minor must be completed no later than the semester in which the student expects to graduate from his or her degree program.
