Major/College Footnotes

1. History I. (GRP 501) One 3-credit course required from the college-approved History
I course list (a 200-level survey course covering a culture significantly different from our
own, i.e., pre-industrial or non-Western) (Satisfies 3 hr GEP Humanities).
2. History II. (GRP 502) One 3-credit course required from the college-approved History
II course list (a 200-level survey course covering our own or a similar culture)
3. Literature I. (GRP 503) One 3-credit course required from the college-approved
Literature I list (a survey course covering literature outside the U.S. and prior to the 20th
century)
*Credit is not allowed for both ENG 251 and either of ENG 261 or ENG 262.
**Honors courses may satisfy the Literature I requirement if more than half of the
literature covered is outside the U.S. and prior to the twentieth century
4. Literature II. (GRP 504) One 3-credit course required from the college-approved
Literature II list (any course that meets the Literature I requirement, or a course in
American or Twentieth Century Literature, or an upper division survey course or
literature course in a period, genre, or major figure in English, a foreign language in
English translation, or the original foreign language)
5.Philosophy
Any 3-credit hour PHI course on the GEP Humanities list.
6. Arts and Letters One 3-credit course is required from the college-approved Arts &
Letters course list. Courses in major field of study (concentration) are excluded.
7. Social Sciences
Four 3-credit hour courses (12 credit hours total) from at least three of the following
areas: ANT, ARE, EC, PS, PSY, SOC. Also ENG 210, GEO 220 or STS 402. Six (6)
credit hours must be taken from the GEP Social Science list.
8. Foreign Language
Completion of Flx 201, or comparable proficiency as demonstrated by examination. (All
students must take the NCSU Proficiency Test upon entering CHASS.
9. Free Electives
Any course except FL 101, FLS 105, GRK 101, LAT 101 and MA 101. Credit hours
toward graduation will be given for FL 101 if: 1) the language was not taken by the
student in high school, 2) the student has met high school proficiency in another
language, and 3) the language is not the student’s native language. Only 12 credit
hours of free electives may be taken for credit only (S/U).
10. Math
Six (6) credit hours are to be chosen from GEP Mathematics list.
11. History and Analysis
Fifteen credit hours required from the following: COM 498, ENG 206, 380, 486,
487,THE 103, THE 236, 340, 433
12. Performance Courses
Six credit hours required from the following: THE 203, 223, 293, 303, 323, 334, 403
13. Linking Courses

14. Advised Elective
Must be approved by advisor.
15. A total of thirty-three credit hours is required in the Theatre Concentration, thirty of them in the major, plus three hours of advised elective. The thirty hours in Arts Applications is divided into three areas – foundation courses (THE 103, 243, 498, ENG 206, 380, 486, 287, THE 203, 223, 293, 303, 323, 334, 403), linking courses (AON 219, ARS 251, 252, 257, 258, 259, 306, 327, 351, 353, 494, 498, MUS 306, STS 257), and a capstone course (ARS 494). At least fifteen of these thirty credit hours must be at the 300-level or higher.
16. All courses in the Theatre Concentration must be passed with a grade of C- or better.
17. GPA of 2.0, major and cum, is required for graduation.
